Lucky Clover Pencil Toppers

May your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, and never in want.

I hope your day is touched by a bit of IRISH LUCK,

Brightened by a song in your heart,

And warmed by the smiles of the people you love.

More toppers for my mother to give-away at the clinic.

It takes about 15 minutes, or so, to make one.

They can brighten your pencils, pens and even your crochet hooks.

There is also an optional way to make an applique.

As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.

I hope they bring you the Luck of the Irish!

Materials:

WW Red Heart yarn:

            Green about 6.5 yards

           

4.5mm / G Hook

Yarn needle

Gauge is not crucial. 

Size:   2” tall and 2” wide (~ 5cm)

To fit a pencil

Abbreviations:

~ = Approximately

Beg = Beginning

Ch(s) = Chain(s)

Dc = Double Crochet

FO = Fasten Off

MR = Magic Ring

Rnd(s) = Round(s)

Sc = Single Crochet

Ss = Slip Stitch

St(s) = Stitch(es)

Clover:  (Side 1)

Rnd 1: With Green yarn:  8 Sc in a MR. 

Join to the first sc with a ss.  (8)

Pull the beg yarn-tail to close.

Work over the tail, to eliminate weaving in later.

Rnd 2: (Ch 1, 2 Dc) all in same joined st.

(2 Dc, Ch 1, Ss) all in the next sc.  [First leaf of the clover done]

 ** (Ss, Ch 1, 2 Dc) all in the next st.

(2 Dc, Ch 1, Ss) all in the next sc.

Repeat from ** once for the third leaf.

Leave the last 2 sc’s unworked. 

           

FO.  [Fasten off one clover side only].

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 for the back side, but FO with about 45 to 50 inches (~ 114 to 127cm) to sew. 

Note Alternate Edge: 

If you would prefer to ss around the leaves, do not FO.

                                    I found it easier to sew the edges, but I did do it both ways.

                                    To ss, check front and back to make sure the sts stay aligned.

Place the two back sides together.

Thread the needle with the yarn-end and overcast around the 3 leaves of the clover.

I used an overcast stitch in the inside loops of each chain and st.

Be sure to stitch in the 2 slip stitches between the rounds.

Make sure those two stitches are snug.

Note: The sts will go through the ch, 4 dc’s, ch and 2 ss’s, for 2 leaves.

Last leaf is through the ch, 4 dc’s and the ch.

When the 3^rd leaf is finished, remove the needle, and continue to the Stem.

Note:  Do not sew the unworked sc’s closed, and do not weave in.

           Remaining yarn will be used for the stem.

Stem:

Rnd 1:  Insert your hook into the first free unworked sc of round 1 of the top Clover.

            Be sure to work through only one Clover side. (1^st pic below)

            Pull up a loop. (2^nd pic below)

Ch 1, Sc across each of the 2 sc’s and also into the ss-join. (3^rd pic below)

Turn the work over to the other side and Sc across the 3 sts on that side.

Join to the first sc.  (6)

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, Sc around. Join.  FO and weave in.
