Lucky Clover Pencil Toppers

May your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, and never in want.

I hope your day is touched by a bit of IRISH LUCK,

Brightened by a song in your heart,

And warmed by the smiles of the people you love.

More toppers for my mother to give-away at the clinic.

It takes about 15 minutes, or so, to make one.

They can brighten your pencils, pens and even your crochet hooks.

There is also an optional way to make an applique.

As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.

I hope they bring you the Luck of the Irish!

Materials:

WW Red Heart yarn:

            Green about 6.5 yards

           

4.5mm / G Hook

Yarn needle

Gauge is not crucial. 

Size:   2” tall and 2” wide (~ 5cm)

To fit a pencil

Abbreviations:

~ = Approximately

Beg = Beginning

Ch(s) = Chain(s)

Dc = Double Crochet

FO = Fasten Off

MR = Magic Ring

Rnd(s) = Round(s)

Sc = Single Crochet

Ss = Slip Stitch

Clover:  (Side 1)

Rnd 1: With Green yarn:  8 Sc in a MR. 

Join to the first sc with a ss.  (8)

Pull the beg yarn-tail to close.

Work over the tail, to eliminate weaving in later.

Rnd 2: (Ch 1, 2 Dc) all in same joined st.

(2 Dc, Ch 1, Ss) all in the next sc.  [First leaf of the clover done]

 ** (Ss, Ch 1, 2 Dc) all in the next st.

(2 Dc, Ch 1, Ss) all in the next sc.

Repeat from ** once for the third leaf.

Leave the last 2 sc’s unworked. 

           

FO.  [Fasten off one clover side only].

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 for the back side, but FO with about 45 to 50 inches (~ 114 to 127cm) to sew. 

Note Alternate Edge: 

If you would prefer to ss around the leaves, do not FO.

                                    I found it easier to sew the edges, but I did do it both ways.

                                    To ss, check front and back to make sure the sts stay aligned.

Place the two back sides together.

Thread the needle with the yarn-end and overcast around the 3 leaves of the clover.

I used an overcast stitch in the inside loops of each chain and st.

Be sure to stitch in the 2 slip stitches between the rounds.

Make sure those two stitches are snug.

Note: The sts will go through the ch, 4 dc’s, ch and 2 ss’s, for 2 leaves.

Last leaf is through the ch, 4 dc’s and the ch.

When the 3^rd leaf is finished, remove the needle, and continue to the Stem.

Note:  Do not sew the unworked sc’s closed, and do not weave in.

           Remaining yarn will be used for the stem.

Stem:

Rnd 1:  Insert your hook into the first free unworked sc of round 1 of the top Clover.

            Be sure to work through only one Clover side. (1^st pic below)

            Pull up a loop. (2^nd pic below)

Ch 1, Sc across each of the 2 sc’s and also into the ss-join. (3^rd pic below)

Turn the work over to the other side and Sc across the 3 sts on that side.

Join to the first sc.  (6)

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, Sc around. Join.  FO and weave in.

Easy St. Paddy’s Day Pencil Hat Topper

  

May good luck be with you wherever you go.

And your blessing outnumber the shamrocks that grow.

May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.

I made these a few years back, for my mother to give-away at the clinic.

It takes about 10 minutes to make one.

I also think they brighten my crochet hooks up a bit.

Pattern Notes:

I used Red Heart Super Saver, but you can use just about any worsted weight yarn: Just measure to make sure that the first couple rounds fit the top of the pencil.

If you want to make these for a fatter sized pencil or pen, you can use a larger hook or single crochet 7 stitches into the beginning magic ring in round 1.

If you add more than 7 stitches to the width of the hat, you should probably add to the height, as well: Just add another round or so of green before changing to the black.

To change colors:

In the last single crochet of the round:

            Pull up a loop with the working yarn to begin the single crochet (so there are two loops on the hook).

            Drop the working yarn, and pull a loop of the new color through the 2 loops on the hook, which will complete the single crochet.

Note: I usually put a slip-knot on the new color before pulling through the loops, to keep it secure and snug.

            Continue by joining to the first single crochet with a slip stitch.  Chain 1, and carry on with the new color (leaving the old color to hang from the inside of the tube).

Work over the tail-end of the new color, to eliminate weaving in later.

            Green about 3 yards (~2.7 meters)

            Black about 45” (~114 cm)

            Yellow or Gold about 12” (~30 cm)

           

    4mm / F or G Hook

    Yarn needle

Gauge is not critical. 

Size: 1 ¼” tall and 1” wide to fit a pencil

Abbreviations:

BLO = Back Loop Only

             Weave in end.

Embroider a gold square on the Black rounds, over 2 sts and 2 rounds.

It can be around 1 stitch on round 4 or over 2 stitches on rounds 4 and 5.

The Hat on the right was slip-stitched. 

I inserted the hook into a stich between rounds 2 and 3, then pulled up a loop from the inside of the hat, and continued with 2 up by 2 over by 2 down and 2 over.
